Achieving Health Equity for Gay Men of Color

I hope during the course of the Summit we are able to address social determinants of health for gay men of color.  Most interventions that are implemented to address health issues for LGBT populations fail to consider the social, economic, and environmental contexts in which they are delivered.  This is even more the case for gay men of color.

Studies have shown that gay and bisexual men of color reside in environments and within social networks that exist outside mainstream support systems for gay white men.  The experiences of gay men of color and the delivery of health interventions need to be considered both from a human rights perspective and in terms of social and health systems advantages that gay white men may have developed as a result of the AIDS epidemic and to some extent even the marriage movement.

I invite Summit participants to think about this as a core part of their discussions at workshops, plenary sessions, and informal conversations with each other.
